Having worked at sea and having lived near the coast in different parts of the world nearly all his life, Robert has spent a long time looking at the sea. Looking whilst drawing and painting, whilst beachcombing, cliff walking, bee keeping, daffodil picking or fishing but mostly whilst just sitting.
This fascination provides the motive for the paintings and prints that have been developing. The mixed media paintings use gesso and wet and dry media. Layers are built up, eroded and built up again alluding to the scouring nature of the sand and sea, the push and shove of the wind. The surf series serigraphs are made using screen stencils with artists acrylic paints on hand made paper. They are hand printed and hand finished. Stencils are modified and reused exploring different colours and papers. Series of prints are made this way, continually changing, evolving, each one different from the next.
