Having spent most of his life, from a small boy, involved in the landscape of Cornwall, Martin Grimshaw attempts to express the sensation that he feels from the interaction of the land and the swiftly changing elements. “When someone comments that ‘it felt exactly like the painting’ then I know I have achieved something” Martin writes.
Apart from life studies, nearly all his paintings relate to an exploration of the area Predannack (the Celtic name for the people of what is now known as the Lizard Peninsula), south of Mullion. However, various recent visits to Spain, Italy and France have also inspired him and animals and churches have been the subject of some of his latest paintings
After graduating in Cybernetics in 1986, followed by a number of years in computer design and teaching, plus Art training in London and Cornwall, Martin now paints full time. He has been awarded a Postgraduate certificate in Fiuna Art from Falmouth College of Art as well as a Master of Arts Degree. He has had solo exhibitions in Cornwall and London and received a bursary to study in Bilbao in 1999. He has also taken part in a number of group exhibitions in London, Falmouth and Penzance.
